Using a debit card is a convenient way to take money from your checking account at an ATM or make a purchase. Protect yourself and your card with these tips.
Using an ATM
Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. If you see anything suspicious, avoid using the machine at that time.
Have your Debit Card ready and in your hand as you approach the ATM.
Inspect the ATM for possible skimming devices. Sticky residue or evidence of an adhesive used by fraudsters to affix the device, scratches, damaged or crooked pieces or extra attachments on the card slot, or noticeable resistance when pressing the keypad, could indicate that a skimming device was installed.
Make sure that no one can see you enter your PIN at the ATM. You can use your body or other hand to block the view of the ATM keyboard.
To keep your account information confidential, always take your receipt with you.
Do not count or show the money you received from the ATM. Immediately put it away and count it later.
If you are using a drive-up ATM, be sure passenger windows are rolled up and all doors are locked. If you leave your car and walk to the ATM, lock your car.
Precautions for using an ATM at Night
Park close to the ATM in a well-lit area.
Take another person with you, if at all possible.
If the lights at the ATM are not working, don't use it.
If the view of the ATM is blocked by shrubbery or trees, use another ATM and let the bank know.
